LAHORE (22-11-24): The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore observed World Fisheries Day with focus on sustainable practices and equity in the fisheries sector with the theme of “Investing in Social Protection to Secure Equitable Blue Transformation in the Fisheries Sector” at the Ravi Campus Pattoki.
Various activities including awareness walk, group discussion, business ideas & fish cooking competitions and fishing activities arranged to mark the day with aimed to creating awareness and fostering innovative thinking in fisheries and aquaculture.
Dean Faculty of Animal Production and Technology Prof Dr Saima addressed the audience that fisheries contribute significantly to Pakistan’s economy and exports. She urged students to become change agents in driving innovation and adopting eco-friendly aquaculture techniques. “As future leaders in aquaculture and fisheries, you must focus on preserving aquatic resources while exploring new avenues for growth,” She added. She also appreciated the efforts of the faculty members of the department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Dr Muhammad Hafeez-ur-Rehman highlighted the critical role of fisheries in combating global food insecurity and unemployment. He emphasized the importance of this year’s theme, calling for investment in social protection policies to ensure fair opportunities and sustainable practices in the fisheries sector.
Chairman Department of Wildlife & Ecology/Principal Office Ravi Campus Prof Dr Arshad Javid reiterated the university’s commitment to promoting education and research in fisheries and aquaculture and appreciated the department of Fisheries and Aquaculture for successful conduction of this event every year. He emphasized the importance of World Fisheries Day in raising awareness about the challenges faced by the sector, particularly by small-scale fishers and the need for inclusive policies to address their concerns.
Earlier Prof Dr Arshad Javid along with Dr Muhammad Hafeez-ur-Rehman led the walk while a large number of students and faculty members were participated. At the end of event Prof Dr Saima distributed the prizes among the winners of business idea and cooking competitions.
Meanwhile a group discussion was held among post graduate students and faculty members, exploring the challenges and opportunities in the fisheries sector, including overfishing, climate change, and the need for technological innovation.
