LAHORE (02-11-26): The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore, held an inauguration ceremony for the externship of 30 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students from two universities in Bangladesh: Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) and Gono University, aimed at enhancing practical skills in veterinary science.
UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Masood Rabbani presided over the inauguration ceremony. CVASU Focal Person Prof. Dr. Rashedul Alam, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science Prof. Dr. Kamran Ashraf, UVAS Externship Program Focal Person Prof. Dr. Arfan Ahmad, along with UVAS senior faculty members and students, were present at the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Masood Rabbani stated that during the externship period, students will learn maximum practical knowledge from UVAS experts. He noted that the UVAS Ravi Campus Pattoki features extensive facilities—such as sheep/goat and dairy farms and a fish processing unit—to impart the best practical knowledge and training to students. He also suggested arranging visits to an industrial facility and a private pet clinic to familiarize the students with commercial industry standards and small-animal clinical practices.
Furthermore, he highlighted UVAS’s initiative, the “Center for Academic Development and Student Wellbeing,” which identifies challenges related to cultural shock, language barriers, nutrition, health, and financial crises faced by students, and takes necessary measures to address them.
Earlier, Prof. Dr. Masood Rabbani welcomed the students and faculty to UVAS Lahore. A brief introduction of both universities was presented through documentaries to provide an overview of UVAS’s academic, research, and development interventions, student enrollment, and collaborations with national and international institutions.
Prof. Dr. Kamran Ashraf remarked that during the Bangladeshi students’ stay, UVAS Lahore will provide all necessary facilities and a conducive environment for learning innovative concepts, hands-on training, and professional skills. He added that UVAS will organize guided tours of dairy/poultry farms and laboratories at the Ravi Campus Pattoki for practical exposure, as well as excursions to historical sites in Lahore to make their stay memorable.
Dr. Arfan Ahmad outlined the aims and objectives of the externship, mentioning that the one-month program will be supervised by UVAS experts who will impart comprehensive practical training in pregnancy diagnosis in small and large animals, semen collection and handling, ultrasound demonstrations, obstetrical case handling, and the clinical uses of diagnostic instruments in livestock practices. The training will also cover systematic clinical examination of animals, organ surgeries, ultrasonography and radiography techniques, disease diagnostic testing, patient care and anesthesia management, and common surgical abnormalities. Additionally, students will receive instruction in equine lameness and shoeing, orthopedic surgery and advanced techniques, animal reproductive techniques, genomic DNA/RNA extraction techniques, the interpretation of serological tests, and veterinary parasitology. He concluded by noting that pre-externship and post-externship assessments will also be conducted for the Bangladeshi students.
