Biography

Prof. Dr. Amjad Riaz is currently working as a Professor and Chairman at the Department of Theriogenology, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore, Pakistan. He earned his DVM and Master's in Theriogenology degrees from the College of Veterinary Sciences, Lahore. His master's work on poultry semen cryopreservation played a pivotal role in establishing artificial insemination techniques in Pakistan's poultry industry. After his master's, he was appointed as a lecturer on contract in the same department. He also served as a Scientific Officer at the Animal Reproduction Laboratory, NARC, Islamabad, and worked on ovarian dynamics in buffalo. He won a scholarship for PhD studies and completed his doctoral studies at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing. During his PhD studies, he worked on animal cloning and embryonic stem cell derivation for therapeutic cloning/regenerative medicine. The quality of this research work was evident by publishing the work in “Cell Research”, a well-reputed scientific journal published by Nature Publishing Group. He is now working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theriogenology.

His areas of interest are Reproductive physiology and Biotechnology. He established the university's first Mice Housing Facility and functional In vitro Embryology Laboratory. He is recognized as a pioneer in introducing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) techniques to Pakistan's livestock sector, successfully producing the country's first IVF calves. In addition to his research contribution in the field of Animal Reproduction, he is also a practicing veterinarian and is responsible for clinical handling at the University Theriogenology and Outdoor clinics. He is also providing private farm consultation services through the university clinical platform.

His research portfolio includes 78 peer-reviewed publications (43 as principal author) with 1,185 citations, an H-index of 16 i10-index of 27, and a Clarivate’s JCR Impact Factor of 119.28. He has presented his research work and expertise at 30 national/international conferences. He has secured funding from six competitive grants: four from the public sector totaling approximately PKR 38 million, and two from the private sector totaling USD 20,000 plus PKR 3.13 million. He received the National Patent Award (2025) for developing a novel buffalo semen extending medium. He was given a Young Scientist Award for his research presented in the 17th International Congress on Animal Reproduction held in Vancouver, Canada.

He has supervised 38 MPhil and 6 PhD students to completion. He currently serves as President of the Society for Animal Reproduction of Pakistan and a member of the Punjab Livestock Breeding Services Authority Technical Committee, contributing significantly to national livestock breeding policies.
