Biography

Dr. Shahid Mehmood began his academic career in 2008 as a Lecturer cum Farm Officer in the Department of Poultry Production, working on the project titled “Establishment of Poultry Research and Training Facilities at Ravi Campus, Pattoki.” In 2011, he was appointed as a Lecturer, and subsequently promoted to Assistant Professor in 2013 and Associate Professor in 2020. He also served as Chairman of the Department of Poultry Production from 2021-2024.Prior to joining academia, he gained valuable field experience with leading poultry organizations in the private sector, including Big Bird and the National Group (Pvt) Ltd.

Dr. Shahid Mehmood possesses specialized expertise in broiler production, indigenous chicken rearing, and poultry waste management. His Ph.D. research focused on “The effect of different management strategies on growth performance, biochemical profile, and immune response of broilers”. He has successfully led and completed several applied research projects in collaboration with the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA), notably on artificial insemination in broiler breeders and the Village School Meal Program in Pattoki. Additionally, he facilitated the establishment of model lighting systems (Lighting Corax) in partnership with HATO Agricultural Lighting, Netherlands. Dr. Mehmood has also contributed as a Co-Principal Investigator or team member in three distinct research projects. In parallel, he developed an innovative composting technology for converting poultry waste into efficient bio-fertilizer. He has played a key role in the development of critical research infrastructure at UVAS, Ravi Campus, Pattoki, including the Broiler Research House, Indigenous Chicken Genetic Resource Center, Model Ostrich Farm, and the Hatchery Unit.

Dr. Shahid Mehmood is a prolific researcher with a substantial contribution to the scientific community. He has authored 90 research articles published in national and international impact factor journals, along with over 70 abstracts presented at various scientific forums. In addition to his academic publications, he has written numerous extension articles for newspapers and magazines aimed at raising public awareness on poultry-related issues. He also serves as a reviewer for several esteemed national and international journals.

As an academic mentor, Dr. Mehmood has supervised 5 Ph.D. and 24 M.Phil. scholars as a major supervisor, and has contributed to the research guidance of an additional 10 Ph.D. and 20 M.Phil. scholars as a member of their supervisory committees. Moreover, He is also the author of the book “Pakistan Poultry Enterprises: A Directory of Punjab-Sindh Region,” which serves as a valuable resource for researchers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers involved in the poultry sector.

Dr. Mehmood has received international training in Poultry Production from Egypt and also represented Pakistan as a keynote speaker at “1st World Native Poultry Conference” held in Thailand. He maintains strong professional linkages with the poultry industry and plays an active role in the Poultry Science Conference held during the International Poultry Expo.

Within the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Dr. Shahid Mehmood holds several key academic and administrative roles. He is currently serving as:
