Biography

Dr. Muhammad Hafeez-ur-Rehman is serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, Pakistan, where he has been working since 2006. Over the course of his career, he has contributed extensively to fisheries research, aquaculture development, and higher education in Pakistan, playing a pivotal role in advancing both academic and applied aspects of the discipline. An HEC Approved Supervisor, he has supervised 11 PhD, 60 M.Phil. 300 BS/MSc. 02 international students, including a postdoctoral fellow from Cameroon and an M.Phil. scholar from Somalia. He has contributing extensively to the academic community with over 100 peer-reviewed publications and more than 250 conference abstracts many of which address critical challenges in fisheries production, product development, integrated aquaculture, aquatic health management, and aquaculture sustainability. He has also authored or co-authored 10 books, manuals, and conference proceedings, served as a resource person in more than 50 workshops and seminars, and has written over 20 extension articles published in Magazine and Digest to educate fish farming community.

In addition to his research achievements, he has been actively involved in academic development and curriculum design. He has contributed to the formulation and revision of curricula for BS, M.Phil., and Ph.D. programs in Fisheries & Aquaculture, Zoology, and Wetlands Management, as well as the National Curriculum for Freshwater Biology and Fisheries under the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. He has also been instrumental in the development of institutional and research infrastructure. He contributed to the planning and establishment of the Fisheries Research and Training Centre at UVAS Ravi Campus, which serves as a model facility for aquaculture education, training, and applied research. His dedication to institutional development reflects his commitment to building capacity and promoting innovation within the aquaculture sector.

Recognizing his outstanding contributions, he received the “Certificate of Excellence Galaxies of Who’s Who in Pakistan, XIXth Star Awards 2008” from the Pakistan Academy of Sciences for his exceptional achievements in Fisheries and Aquaculture, Prof. Dr. Abdul Shakoor Chaudhry 3rd Gold Medal in October 2022 from the Applied Zoological Society of Pakistan, acknowledging his outstanding academic and scientific achievements in the field of Nutrition as well as significant contributions to Pakistan’s aquaculture sector, he was honored with the prestigious Alltech Aqua Commitment Award during IDEA AQUATHON 2024. He is also an active member of several professional and statutory bodies at the university, national, and international levels. He maintains strong professional linkages and close interaction with fish farmers and aquaculture industry stakeholders across Pakistan.

Dr. Hafeez-ur-Rehman has enhanced his professional expertise through participation in various international training programs, including Mariculture Technology for Developing Countries at the Fujian Institute of Oceanography, Xiamen, China; Aquaculture Wales at the University of Wales, Swansea, UK, under the HEC-BC JHELP program; and Aquaculture Development and Management at the Egyptian International Center for Agriculture (EICA), Cairo, Egypt. These experiences have enriched his perspective on global aquaculture trends and technologies, which he continues to apply in his teaching and research. His extensive fieldwork and outreach activities include surveys of the Salt Range Wetlands Complex (SRWC) and Makran Coast Wetland Complex (MCWC), where he led community awareness campaigns for sustainable management of wetland resources. He also participated in inter-provincial study tours to explore aquaculture and trout culture facilities in Sindh, Balochistan, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, as part of the HEC Inter-Provincial Exchange Program. Throughout his career, he has successfully completed six major research projects, three of which have had significant industrial and socioeconomic impact. Among these, his Punjab Agriculture Research Board (PARB)-funded project on “Development and Establishment of Poultry-cum-Fish Farming with Nutrient Recycling: An Integrated Approach” promoted small-scale aquaculture through integrated farming systems, enhancing productivity and resource efficiency. Under a PSF funded project, he led the “Isolation, Molecular Characterization, and Development of Fish Vaccines for Culturable Fish Species of Pakistan”, resulting in the successful development of five aquaculture vaccines. Furthermore, through his HEC-TDF-funded project titled “Sustainable Production of Processed Fish Meat and Value-Added Fish Products”, he developed over 100 value-added fish products at the UVAS Fish Processing and Value Addition Unit. The innovative products were showcased at the All Punjab Universities Innovation Expo 2023 held at the Expo Center, Lahore, organized by the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC), as well as during the Aqua Business Promotion Symposium 2023 organized by the Department of Fisheries, Government of Punjab, Lahore. These initiatives have played a crucial role in strengthening Pakistan’s fish processing industry, promoting value addition, and supporting the country’s aquaculture economy.

Dr. Muhammad Hafeez-ur-Rehman continues to be an inspiring academic, researcher, and leader, devoted to enhancing aquaculture productivity, sustainability, and innovation in Pakistan and beyond.
