UVAS holds national symposium on Bovine Brucellosis & Control Strategies

LAHORE (28-11-24): The University Diagnostic Laboratory (UDL) and Institute of Microbiology of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore in collaboration with UM Enterprises arranged a daylong national symposium on “Bovine Brucellosis & Control Strategies” at UVAS City Campus.

UVAS Vice-Chancellor Meritorious Prof Dr Muhammad Younus (DLA.I, T.I) presided over the inaugural session of the symposium while Emeritus Prof Dr Masood Rabbani, Director Institute of Microbiology (IOM) Prof Dr Aftab Ahmed Anjum, Incharge UDL lab Prof Dr Amir Ghafoor Bajwa, Chief Organizer Symposium Prof Dr Arfan Ahmad, researchers, stakeholders, health care professionals, dairy farmers, UVAS faculty members and students were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Muhammad Younus said that brucellosis is one of the most pressing zoonotic diseases which badly affect livestock production and cause the economic loss of livestock farmers. He called Mphil and Phd scholars to choose topics for research thesis to address the livestock & dairy sector issue. He said this symposium is providing opportunities to professionals/livestock farmers to discuss disease related issues and share their knowledge & experience to boost dairy sector in Pakistan. He said I am optimistic that expert will formulate guidelines for the control of brucellosis and discuss strategies that how to treat affected animals in the symposium. He lauded organizers for arranging the symposium for the development of livestock sector.

Dr Amir Ghafoor Bajwa said University Diagnostic Laboratory is providing disease diagnostics services to livestock farmers. He said UDL is Pakistan’s first ISO 17025 accredited veterinary disease diagnostic lab that provides ISO-certified diagnostic tests for the identification and monitoring of emerging diseases. He said UDL staff trained a number of professionals those who are serving in different renowned laboratories of Pakistan as human resource.

Prof Dr Arfan said this symposium was arranged to create awareness among professionals and livestock farmers that how to detect brucellosis and what will be strategies for the treatment of affected animals. Prof Dr Aftab Ahmad Anjum thanked farmers and stakeholders for making this symposium successful.

During daylong symposium experts delivered their lectures on bovine brucellosis in Pakistan, impact of bovine brucellosis on dairy productivity & profitability, diagnosis of bovine brucellosis, battling bovine brucellosis & therapeutic challenges. They also discussed the latest advancement, research innovation and therapeutic challenges of brucellosis in the symposium.

A panel discussion between livestock farmers and experts comprised of Prof Dr Aftab Ahmad Anjum, Dr Sajid Hussain, Dr Amir Ghafoor and Dr Aijaz Ali Channa was conducted in the symposium to find out the way forward to address brucellosis issues.
